Raised bed gardening offers many benefits, like improved soil conditions, higher yields, ease of access, and better pest control. Raised beds can be setup almost anywhere—regardless of soil quality, and with less effort than digging—to produce more vegetables per square foot, which makes them the perfect solution for urban gardening.
We have designed a kit to make building a raised bed as easy as possible. Just level ground, stack boards and insert corner pins to create a long-lasting bed for your flowers and vegetables. No tools necessary. Assembly takes just minutes.
Raised beds are available in over 100 shapes and sizes, from two to thirty feet long and 5.5 to 33 inches deep. They're made from untreated, kiln-dried Port Orford cedar—the strongest of all cedars—as strong as Doug Fir and more rot-resistant than Redwood.
Port Orford cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, also known as Lawson cypress) is fragrant, light-colored wood with even texture and strong natural oils that help protect against moisture and microorganisms. The wood will long outlast most lumber found in stores, with a life span of 30 or more years under normal conditions.
Pin assembly allows wood to shrink and swell for improved durability in wet/dry conditions.
Sometimes, Simple is Better
Unlike most raised beds, the simple design of our kits allows wood to shrink and swell for improved durability in wet conditions. Hardware like screws and nails eventually loosen as wood ages; our kits assemble with rust-free metal pins set securely through the ends of each board. So after years of exposure, the bed won't fall apart, and yet can be disassembled by hand if needed.
In addition to being strong and easy to assemble, the pin design makes with some nifty growing options. Try flexible piping bent over the corner pins, to provide support for a cold frame or shade cloth covering; or fit piping over pins on the north side of the bed, and tie string for climbing plants, like beans and vine tomatoes. Raised beds come with extra long pins for exactly this purpose. If not needed, simply stake the pins into the ground to set flush with the top of the planter.

I purchased some raised bed planters last March. When they arrived, I thought, "Nancy, what were you thinking?!" I spend most of the summer in the western mountains of Maine, where I have more acreage. Building a raised bed is much easier than ploughing, because of the abundance of rock in the soil. Or the shortage of soil in the rocks, however you care to look at it....
